In November of 1995, a committee was appointed to look at the possibility of establishing an intermediate school in the Athens District. The committee included parents, teachers, a counselor, a special education representative, an administrator, a central office representative, and a board member. The committee members were charged with the task of identifying the most appropriate school setting and curriculum for students ages 10-12.
Based on its findings, the committee recommended that a new intermediate school be built for fifth and sixth grade students. The school would incorporate teaching and learning approaches specifically designed to meet the needs of pre-adolescent students. However, until a new facility could be built for both fifth and sixth grade students, a separate school for sixth graders would be established in August of 1997 on the middle school campus with its own principal and staff. Fifth grade students and faculty would remain at the four elementary schools.
In August of 2002, years of dreaming, planning, and building a new intermediate school became a reality. All fifth and sixth grade students in the city of Athens made the transition into the new intermediate school building, along with faculty and staff from five different schools. We want this school to be a place where children can learn, have fun, and build lasting friendships, and we have a dedicated staff and a supportive community who hold the education of children close to their hearts.
The Athens Intermediate School faculty and staff are committed to working just as hard as the dreamers, planners, and builders to design an instructional program that is motivating, challenging, and relevant for pre-adolescents. It is our hope that each student’s experience at Athens Intermediate School will truly be an “Adventure In Success.”
